Crewmates
Memorial

We have added a very special page honoring our
shipmates who have died in recent years. We dedicate this page to the
memory of AW1 Joseph "Boats" Pycior Jr., who died last year in the
Pentagon tragedy of September 11th. Joe served aboard the USS W. S. Sims
from January 1982 to July 1983.
Please email the names of
other sailors you are aware have passed on, along with pictures and
information you have about our comrade.

By-Laws
Available for Review
President
Dave Andrews, along with Vice President Kenneth Campbell, Secretary Denny
Walterman, and Treasurer Rob "Barney" Muirhead have
prepared revised and expanded BY-LAWS
for the USS WS Sims Association (DE/FF1059), Inc.
They are available HERE
for review and will be sent out to the Regular Membership by email and
snail mail prior to the 2007 Reunion. On Saturday, during the reunion in
NORFOLK, an Annual Meeting will be held of the Association. Those
members in active status and in attendance at the Annual Meeting will be
asked to approve these revised BY-LAWS. Contact the Board at info@ussSIMS1059.org,
for more information or questions.
Support
Our Troops
This holiday season our troops need your support. We want to bring
attention to two new websites that help us do just that. When you are divvying
out the shekels this Christmas, send some to AmericaSupportsYou.mil,
USOCares.org
and the WoundedWarriorProject.org
-- three very worthy projects for our military abroad.
We are also preparing a special
page to keep everyone apprised of your son's and daughter's abroad serving
in military hot spots, like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Bosnia. Please email
us specifics about them, their assignment or tour, and a snail
mail or email address, so we can contact them with our thoughts and
prayers.
Our Website
Receives National Recognitions
We are
very proud and humble to have recently received two recognitions for our
"Mighty Fine -1059" website. First from the
DESA awards committee Their award is reserved for websites
that present exemplary content in preserving the history of the Destroyer
Escort, the US
Navy or other branches of our Armed Forces and/or honoring or assisting
our Veterans.

Second, we have also been
recognized
as a "great" military-related site by GruntsMilitary.com; itself
a multi-service resource designed as an aid for individuals researching
the United States' armed forces. We
thank both organizations for these high honors.
Photo
of the Month
Over the last four years shipmates have submitted hundred's of terrific
photographs of the SIMS, her crew, and the places they visited. From time to
time we receive one that really tells a story. We highlight these
jewels in a section, called Photo of
the Month. Check out our newest submission by Ken
Homola (ETCS 1980-84).

Fellow Comrad and Shipmate Passes
Sadly, on 4 November 2006, EWC Fred L. Myers passed away
at his home in Erwin, Tennessee. We received word from his
eldest son, Joseph. Chief Myers served aboard the SIMS
during the 1976-79 period. It was during this era that
shipmates experienced the storm at sea that tore away a portion
of our famous MAC. Condolences can be sent to the family by
contacting Joseph at JMMtnsales@aol.com.
Where
in the World are all the SIMS Scalawags?
USS
WS Sims shipmates are scattered all
across this great nation. Have you ever wondered where "Barney",
or Virgil, or "Daddy Wags" ended up living and
raising a family?
Well, Virgil
Bierschwale (RM3, 1976-82) is developed a graphic tool depicting the
USA that pinpoints where everyone lives. You can click on the map image above and
it will link you to his new improved
locator. Please email
us with your name, rate/rank aboard, and zip code and we'll have your push
pin added to Virgil's
creation!
Keep
Us Up-to-Date
We
know with all the spam and other garbage coming over the
internet it becomes necessary to change you email address to get
away from it all. Or maybe you sign-up for high-speed
internet, so you can send us lots of pictures to post! In any
case, keep us in mind when you notify your
family and friends of a change. Please email
us
with your new address so we can continue to stay in touch with
all the latest USS WS Sims news you can use!
Nice
Things Written About Navy Life
We don't know if you are as much
of a Ben Stein fan as we
are, but this stirring article written by Ben could not go by us unmentioned.
It appeared on the Gossip page of E! Online, in a June 2003 column written by
Ben, called This
Is the Way of the Armed Forces: Team Playing to Protect a Nation Only Barely
Aware They Exist. It's definitely worth a read.
If you haven't seen Ben Stein on Comedy
Central or the Fox News Channel, we also recommend you visit his
website: www.BenStein.com.
He is an extremely interesting, funny and provocative fellow. We first laughed
at him in the 1986 movie, Ferris Bueller's Day
Off,
where he
appeared as Matthew Broderick's teacher ("Any one.. any one?").
